Share your memories of the past and your thoughts for the future in the ALLJ

Do you have those moments when the 'Do you remember when...' Or the 'I think this will happen in the future '? Yes? Come on you know you do. Because as librarians we are naturally enthusiastic for the future and preservers of the past.

With the final issue of the journal for this year the Australian Law Librarian Journal is looking for people to share their thoughts for the future and memories of the past.

But this time it's a bit different… I'm not asking for an article. Rather share your thoughts with a maximum 200-150 words.

You can submit multiple thoughts and they can be anonymous of you so choose.

Please submit your thoughts but 15 October.

Mining Law in WA write up

ALLA(WA) CPD session: An outline of types of litigation under the Mining Act 1978 (WA) and some recent cases

(Presented by Anthony Papamatheos, Barrister at Francis Burt Chambers)

This lunchtime CPD session was hosted at Francis Burt Chambers on Thursday 15th September and was attended by 13 members and 4 non-members.

Anthony provided a short overview of the Mining Act 1978 (WA) and Mining Regulations 1981 (WA), including the types of land over which tenements are granted in WA, the types of tenements and their key features and obligations. We were also provided with an overview of the application processes, how tenements may be forfeited or surrendered and how underlying land owners or occupiers can seek compensation for loss from mining.

The session concluded with Anthony discussing some recent cases paying homage to the benefit of strong attention to detail and the importance of point-in-time research in mining law.

A paper is available for members who were unable to attend the session. Please contact for a copy

ALLA(WA) thanks Anthony for this informative presentation.

Delegate report: ALLA Conference 2016

The Australian Law Librarians’ Association Conference 2016 was held 24-26th August 2016 at the beautiful State Library of Victoria.

The State Library of Victoria
Eight lucky Western Australian delegates were in attendance. (You may have seen the lucky group over on our Twitter).

Events on Wednesday the 24th August included a tour of the Supreme Court of Victoria Library. As well as exploring the magnificent heritage-listed building, delegates were able to view historical items such as the court book that records the fate of Ned Kelly.

The first day of the conference program included the Welcome to Country that was conducted by a representative of the Wurundjeri Tribe Land & Compensation Cultural Heritage Council, offering an insight into the history of the Wurundjeri people.

Delegates were then privileged to have the Hon. Marilyn Louise Warren present the opening address.  Part of her presentation identified that “knowledge needs to be managed” paying respect to law librarians that have helped her throughout her legal career.

The cocktail function at the Old Melbourne Goal
On the evening of Thursday 25th of August, The Old Melbourne Gaol was a unique and intriguing venue for the cocktail function.  Those brave enough attended a ghost tour!

Further sessions held at the conference included managing your career, implementing a legal research program and a training perspectives panel.

A more in depth look at these sessions will be provided at the ALLA (WA) CPD Event: Conference Wrap-up presented by Mawghan Elverd, the recipient of the 2016 ALLA (WA) / Wolters Kluwer CCH Conference Bursary. This event is scheduled for 13th of October 2016. Keep an eye out for the invite and remember to RSVP as places are limited.

ALLA Conference 2018 will be held in Darwin, Northern Territory.

ALLA (WA) President's Corner - Vol. 1 Issue. 1

Hi ALLA(WA) Members
Natalie McDonald
Natalie McDonald, ALLA (WA) President

Each month I’ll be writing a President's Corner post, letting you know about the services and events of the ALLA(WA).

We held our AGM on 27th July 2016 where the new 2016/2017 Committee were confirmed.  This term we had a few new members join the Committee Catherine Kafentzis from University of WA Law Library and Stephen Griffiths from the Dept of Attorney General’s Library. The details of the new Committee have been updated on the ALLA website, and our blog.

The attendance at the AGM and past AGM’s have been poor and one of our focus’ for this year is to look at ways of improving the attendance either by combining the AGM with another event or holding it at different times (i.e. Breakfast).   If you have any ideas or feedback please let me know.

Upcoming ALLA(WA) PD & Social Events
The ALLA(WA) CPD Sub Committee have been busy creating a schedule of professional development and social events for this term, with the first event being held on 15th September.

The session is on ‘Mining Law in WA’ presented Anthony Papamatheos from Francis Burt Chambers. Anthony will discuss the types of litigation under the Mining Act 1978 (WA) before the Warden or Warden's Court and will then explain some recent cases.  We have opened this event up to members and non-members where non-members will pay a fee.  If you haven’t responded to attend, please let Alice Hewitt ( know by Tuesday 13th of September. Numbers are limited.

In October, we will here from the Wolters Kluwer CCH Conference Bursary recipient over a lunch time 'brown-bag' session.

MOU Update
It is anticipated that ALLA(WA) members will vote on the MOU later this year. We have tentatively scheduled a vote to be held during November.  More information will be provided to members around this issue along with details of the date and venue.

WA Unreported judgments
AustLII have confirmed that the WA unreported judgments should be online in September.  We will bring you updates via the Blog when this occurs.

This year we have created a couple of new ALLA(WA) Sub Committees to better reflect our activities.  They are: Compliance & Regulatory Sub Committee which covers compliance, auditing and regulatory issues, and the Website & Social Media Sub Committee which combines website co-ordinator, blog editor, Flickr and Twitter management.

With the proclaimed changes to the Associations Incorporation Act 2005 (WA),  the ALLA(WA) Compliance & Regulatory Sub Committee are ensuring that the ALLA(WA) Constitution complies with these changes.

Blog Statistics
I am pleased to report that the Blog has posted over 600 posts and had 52000+ page views! Thank you everyone for supporting us.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any ideas around CPD events or would like to provide feedback.

Kind regards,

Natalie McDonald
2016/2017 ALLA(WA) President
